Biography
Dr. Carla M. Nester, MD, MSA, FASN, is the Jean Robillard Professor of Pediatric Nephrology and the Division Director of Pediatric Nephrology, Dialysis, and Transplantation at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City, IA. She is also the Associate Director of the Molecular Otolaryngology and Renal Research Laboratories (MORL) at the University of Iowa, the largest combined clinical and research laboratory in North America focusing on complement biology.
Dr. Nester is a tenured, NIH-funded faculty member leading a translational research program dedicated to rare complement-mediated kidney diseases. As the primary clinical investigator for the University of Iowa C3 Glomerulopathy Natural History Study, she manages one of the largest cohorts of patients with this rare condition, advancing knowledge and treatment strategies.
An experienced clinical trialist, Dr. Nester’s clinical practice has become a central hub for introducing new anticomplement therapeutics to patients with rare kidney diseases. Her work bridges cutting-edge research and clinical practice, contributing significantly to the treatment and understanding of complement-mediated kidney conditions.
