New Horizons in Obesity Management returned on 17 June 2026 for its third edition, bringing together leading international experts to explore obesity as a central driver of cardio-kidney-metabolic (CKM) disease and a key contributor to multimorbidity across organ systems.
Through a series of practical, evidence-based sessions, faculty examined the latest science, clinical data and treatment strategies shaping modern obesity care. The programme introduced three dedicated specialty tracks – cardiology, primary care and obesity-focused practice – allowing attendees to follow the learning pathway most relevant to their clinical practice or explore the full spectrum of content on demand. Across the sessions, experts discussed lifestyle, pharmacological and procedural approaches, with a focus on translating emerging evidence into real-world patient care.
Led by course directors Dr Angela Fitch (Knownwell, Boston, US), Prof Richard Hobbs (University of Oxford, Oxford, UK) and Prof Nikolaus Marx (University Hospital Aachen, Aachen, DE), the programme featured a distinguished global faculty and explored how earlier intervention, multidisciplinary collaboration and evolving obesity therapies can improve outcomes across the CKM continuum.

Faculty Biographies
Richard Hobbs
Professor and Head of Primary Care Health Services
Richard Hobbs is Professor and Head of Primary Care Health Sciences at the University of Oxford, UK. He is Co-Director of the Quality and Outcomes Review Panel and Deputy Director of the National Institute for Health Research National School for Primary Care Research.
Prof Hobbs serves on numerous scientific boards and is chair of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Council of Primary Care, as well as the Prevention and Care Board of the British Heart Foundation (BHF). His publications include 25 book chapters, nine edited books and more than 250 original papers in peer-reviewed journals.
Luc Van Gaal
Head of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Metabolism
Prof Luc Van Gaal is Head of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Metabolism at University of Antwerp, Antwerp, BE.
In 1983, he obtained a specialist degree in internal medicine and afterward in endocrinology and metabolism.
His main clinical and research interests are related to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and lipid metabolism.
Prof Van Gaal is a board member of the Belgian Association for the Study of Obesity (BASO) and Past-President of the Belgian Diabetic Society.
Erin D Michos
Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Women's Cardiovascular Health
Dr Erin Michos is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, with joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is the Director of Women’s Cardiovascular Heath and Associate Director of Preventive Cardiology with the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease.
Dr Michos is an internationally known expert in Preventive Cardiology and Women’s Health and has authored over 350 publications. Her research has focused on cardiovascular disease among women; coronary artery calcium, inflammatory markers, and other novel biomarkers of cardiovascular risk; lipids; and vitamin D and other supplements. She is an Associate Editor for Circulation and the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

Sean Wharton
Dr Sean Wharton is an internal medicine specialist, obesity medicine expert, and advocate for health equity. He is the Medical Director of the Wharton Medical Clinic a community-based weight management and diabetes clinic in Ontario, Canada, and serves as a faculty member at the University of Toronto, McMaster University, and York University.
Dr Wharton is widely recognised as a lead author of Canada's 2020 Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines, which helped redefine obesity as a chronic disease and promoted patient-centered care. His research and clinical work focus on obesity management, type 2 diabetes, bariatric medicine, and reducing weight bias in healthcare.
Ozden Gokdemir
Associate Professor
Ozden Gokdemir is an Associate Professor at the Izmir University of Economics - Faculty of Medicine in Izmir, Turkey. She is also Chair of the World Organisation for Family Doctors (WONCA) Working Party on Planetary Health and past lead of the special interest group on mental health at the European Young Family Doctors Movement (EYFMD).
